Behavior:

The tomtate is by far the most common member of the grunt family in Florida. This species is found in large schools on coral reefs, but forms pairs for breeding. They have a varied diet consisting of small crustaceans, molluscs, polychaetes, plankton and algae.

Predators:

Grouper, snapper, trumpetfish and scorpionfish.
