Behavior:
French grunts form large schools on rocky and coral reefs. During the day, adults can often be found resting under ledges and near elkhorn coral. Juveniles spend the day hiding near the shore. French grunts are nocturnal and typically feed on small crustaceans, polychaetes and molluscs.
Predators:
Sharks, grouper, snapper and trumpetfish.
Did you know?
Juvenile French grunts head out in the afternoon to feed on seagrass beds at night. In the morning, when they are done feeding, they faithfully return to the exact same shoreline resting site they were in the day before – which is the same spot as the day before that, and the day before that. Also, they get their name (grunt) from the sound their teeth make when they grind.
