Behavior:
Smooth trunkfish are easily recognized by their black mouth and white-spotted, triangular shape. They are slow, relying on their armor and toxins for protection. They are easily approached and are often seen hunting bottom invertebrates by jetting water from their mouths to shift sand and locate their prey.

Mahi mahi, cobia and large carnivorous fish.

The smooth trunkfish is a member of the genus Lactophrys, which is more commonly known as ‘cowfish’. This is in reference to the spines that occur in some members of this genus, which resemble the horns of a cow. The species name, triqueter, means ‘three angled’, which is in reference to this fish’s triangular body shape when viewed head on.
