Sharpnose Puffer

Canthigaster rostrata

Maximum Size:

4.5 in (12 cm)

Longevity:

Unknown, possibly up to 10 years.

Typical depth:

3–130 ft (1–40 m)

Behavior:

Sharpnose puffers prefer reefs where gorgonian corals are common. They are most active during the day as they search for small reef invertebrates such as crabs, shrimp, worms, and snails. They are territorial, so if you happen to see two individuals near one another, they may be engaged in defensive displays.

Predators:

Grouper, snapper, barracuda and moray eels.

Did you know?

The sharpnose puffer has beak-like teeth that grow continuously, much like rabbit teeth. They feed on hard-shelled prey, which wears down their teeth over time. However, their teeth can overgrow if hard-shelled prey are scarce.
