Behavior:
Regal demoiselles are native to the Indo-West Pacific and the Red Sea. They were first spotted in the Western Atlantic off the coast of Mexico in 2013, and have since spread slowly along the northern Gulf of Mexico from Louisiana to Florida. The species feeds mainly on crustaceans and plankton and is occasionally spotted in small schools in the water column or above reefs.
Predators:
Grouper, snapper and eels.
Did you know?
This species has also been spotted in the waters of Trinidad, in the southern Caribbean. It is believed that this population hitchhiked in the ballast water of oil platforms that were moved from the Pacific to the Atlantic.
