Regal angelfish

Pygoplites diacanthus

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific

Maximum Size:

10 in (25 cm)

Longevity:

Up to 15 years.

Typical depth:

3–260 ft (1–80 m)

Behavior:

The Regal angelfish is a shy, reclusive species that prefers areas with high coral cover and plenty of hiding spots. Unlike most other angelfish species that roam openly on the reef, the Regal is often found darting between crevices or hovering under ledges. They are usually seen alone or in pairs. Their diet is highly specialized, consisting almost exclusively of sponges and tunicates. Because they are constant foragers, they spend most of their daylight hours nipping at the reef substrate, playing a crucial role in preventing sponges from overgrowing stony corals.

Predators:

Grouper, moray eels and reef sharks.
