Polka-Dot Batfish

Ogcocephalus cubifrons

Maximum Size:

15 in (38 cm)

Longevity:

Around 10 years.

Typical depth:

3–230 ft (1–70 m)

Behavior:

These odd-looking fish tend to live on sandy bottoms or among coral rubble. Their flattened bodies are often held up by stout pectoral fins that can be used to “walk” along the seabed. They are easily confused with other batfish species in the region, specifically the similar shortnose batfish. Polka-dot batfish typically feed on juvenile fish, small crustaceans and mollusks.

Did you know?

Batfish lack typical scales. Instead, their bodies are covered in modified scales called tubercles – round warty nodules – that give the fish a rough bump-like appearance and provide a form of protection against predation.
