Behavior:
This smaller snapper forms large schools during the day, typically in shallower waters over coral reefs. At night, mahogany snapper feed on small fish, shrimp, crabs and cephalopods. They frequent warmer waters and only stray into temperate climates during the heat of summer.
Predators:
Moray eels, sharks, large grouper and barracuda.
Did you know?
Many juvenile snapper shelter in mangroves or seagrass beds until they are large enough to venture out on the reef. But the young of mahogany snapper grow up right next door, on the back reef.
