Holocentrus rufus
Longspine Squirrelfish
Maximum Size:
14 in (35 cm)
Longevity:
Unknown, possibly up to 14 years.
Typical depth:
0–105 ft (0–32 m)
Behavior:
Longspine squirrelfish often form schools of 8 to 10 individuals at night when they forage for benthic organisms, such as crabs, shrimp, gastropods and brittlestars. During the day, these big-eyed fish seek shelter in holes and crevices in the reef, defending them from other squirrelfish.
Predators:
Sharks, grouper, snapper, trumpetfish and lionfish.
Did you know?
Nocturnal fish are often red in color. Red light is absorbed particularly quickly in the water, making this color hard to see against the background and helping red fish blend into their surroundings.
