Behavior:
There are around 250 species in the lanternfish family. These fish often have a slender body and rounded head, but body size and shape may vary widely between species. Lanternfish are found throughout the world from surface waters to the deep ocean and from pole to pole. Shallow-living species are an iridescent blue to green or silver.

Lanternfishes are a major source of food for a range of marine animals, including whales, dolphins, tuna, sharks, penguins and squid.

Lanternfish possess photophores (light-producing organs) that emit a blue, green, or yellow light. The light-producing cells are most-often concentrated in rows along the side of the and head. Bioluminescence in lanternfish is believed to play a role in communication, ranging from schooling to courtship.
