Behavior:
Gulf flounders tend to prefer sandy bottoms, although they can also be found in seagrass beds and on rubble bottoms. They are well-camouflaged and usually lie flat and motionless on the bottom, often partly buried in the sediment. They are ambush predators that hunt schooling fish, such as grunts, pigfish, pinfish and shrimp.

Gulf flounder are most common in the Gulf of Mexico. They are also found throughout the northern Caribbean and north along the coast of North America. They are largely absent west of the Mississippi Delta and in the southern Caribbean.
