Cyphoma gibbosum
Flamingo Tongue
Maximum Size:
1.5 in (4 cm)
Longevity:
Unknown, likely 2 years.
Typical depth:
6–45 ft (2–14 m)
Behavior:
Flamingo tongues are reef gastropods (marine snails) almost always found feeding on sea fans, sea whips, and other gorgonians. The flesh of the gorgonian they eat contains toxic chemicals that the flamingo tongue absorbs to produce its own predator-deterring toxins.
Predators:
Hogfish
Did you know?
Flamingo tongues occasionally leave their host to search for new food sources. When they want to leave, they often crawl down the base of the gorgonian, but they can also descend to the seabed on a thread of mucus, somewhat like a spider.
