Behavior:

Hamlets are often found on the seaward side of reefs. Butter hamlets feed on benthic crustaceans, such as shrimp and crabs, and occasionally small fish.

Predators:

Grouper, snapper, jacks and barracuda.

There is some scientific debate as to whether the various hamlet species are in fact different species at all. They are typically differentiated by their coloration, although there is little genetic difference among species, and they can often interbreed.
