Behavior:
Blackfin snapper are a deep-water species often found near drop-offs. They are usually red in color, but have silver on the underside and yellow on the tail as juveniles. Blackfin snapper often form small schools of about 20 to 30 individuals, and like other snapper species, they prey primarily on smaller fish such as grunts and goatfish, but also on worms, molluscs and crustaceans.
Predators:
Sharks, barracuda, grouper, moray eels and larger snapper species.
Did you know?
The species name buccanellla, is the local name of the fish in Martinique, where it was first discovered and described in 1828 by French zoologist Georges Cuvier.
