The SS United States was a luxury liner was built in 1952. She quickly gained a reputation for her speed, strength, and craftsmanship and held the transatlantic speed record until retiring from active service in 1969. After decades spent at dock in the Delaware River in Philadelphia, she has found new life as an artificial reef. A land-based museum will continue to tell her story. The SS United States artificial reef will be deployed offshore at a depth of 180 feet (55 meters). However, given the extraordinary size of the ship, the upper decks will sit at a depth of just 57 feet (17.5 meters), making large portions of the vessel accessible to divers of all experience levels. The two iconic funnels and the radar mast were removed while the ship was being cleaned and prepared for deployment to avoid interfering with marine navigation.
